Animal law has emerged as a niche field in law schools. August 2019, Harvard Law launched its Animal Law & Policy Clinic. The number of schools in the United States offering animal law courses has increased from only nine institutions in the year 2000 to 167 law schools in 2019. Student chapters of the Animal Legal Defense Fund are actively promoting a cadre of active attorneys to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system. This unique, interesting field of law is not limited to new attorneys. Experienced practitioners can bring their own skills to work on behalf of animals.
An animal-centered law practice involves a wide variety of causes of action: housing law, criminal law, negligence, conversion, products liability, contracts, custody and visitation, estate planning, administrative proceedings, nonprofit and issues of board governance, and consumer protection, among many others. For attorneys practicing in this field, there are m any avenues in which to build a vibrant client base.
