Forensic psychologists are specialized in conducting mental health evaluations with those who are involved in the legal system. Sexual risk assessments are often needed at various stages of the legal process (e.g., pre-trial, trial, sentencing, community supervision, and SVP civil commitment). A forensic psychological evaluation in this context can provide information and opinions regarding a particular person’s risk for reoffending, the empirically supported risk factors associated with such, and treatment recommendations. These evaluations can often be beneficial in informing decisions related to bail motions, plea bargaining, and sentencing.
